The History of TRIO
TRIO is a pipeline of federal academic support programs that help eligible, underserved students overcome social and cultural barriers to higher education.
TRIO began in the 1960's through several federal acts that created programs like Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services. Eventually, the term "TRIO" was coined to describe the three of them.
Now, TRIO encompasses a total of 8 programs that assist students all the way from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.
TRIO Programs at Missouri State
Missouri State University currently hosts 2 TRIO programs:
- Student Support Services, a program that provides current college students with academic, financial, and other support services.
- Upward Bound, a pre-college enrichment and preparation program that serves local Springfield Public high school students from Central, Parkview, and Hillcrest.
We recognize that many students have significant barriers to overcome to complete their schooling. TRIO's goal is to empower students to take control of their education and to help students overcome social and cultural roadblocks in education.
